View Full Version : Has FTP changed on Sonic?

Hiya, folks...
Over the last few days, I've noticed that when uploading a file with a name identical to one on the server (Sonic, in this case), my FTP client (Transmit 1.6, Mac) no longer notices the identical name and warns me about overwriting-- it just uploads and nukes the existing file.
:\
Something may have changed more than a few days ago, but I hadn't FTP'd in a few weeks.
Anything different about FTP on Sonic lately?
Thanks!

The 'overwrite' protection is a function of the FTP client and not of the server...
Check your options to ensure nothing has changed... Also, remember that filenames are case sensitive so the following files are allowed to co-exist:
image.jpg
image.JPG
Image.jpg
etc...

Hi, Terra...
Wow... That was quick!
Yup, I checked those things... My settings hadn't changed; they were still set to "Ask me what to do". And the case has been the same every time.
Hmmm... Maybe the prefs file on my client is corrupted, and it's lying to me. I'll trash it and see what happens...
Tappity-tap, click...
Nope. Still does the same thing.
It's as if each filename my client is receiving in the directory listing is somehow different... like a hidden character is creeping into each one or something (he said, off the top of his head).
And then when I upload the file, the client is telling the server the correct filename, because the server's not creating a new file, but rather overwriting the correct file.
It seems to this amateur... :)
Any theories, other than client screwiness?

Can you try a completely different FTP client?
Give 'fetch' a spin and see what happens...
Generally, the client does the following:
retrieve file listing and caches
prepares to upload file
checks cached file list for duplicate entry
checks it's options for overwrite ability
if yes: upload file and clobber existing
if no: throw up a confirmation message box

After evaluating four different ftp clients for 30 days that retailed for $39. US I bought this one:
http://www.ghisler.com/ Windows Commander... also has file manager functions for $28. US.
I've had it for six weeks now, no troubles, easy to use.

Well, I just tried that, and got a different error:
> Connection Refused:
> Authenticate First.
Never saw that one before... But then again, I haven't used Fetch in years. Tried two different versions, (3.03 and 4.02), but no joy. Looked at the Prefs settings, and nothing that seemed to affect authentication order presented itself.
And I figgered the process was as you described; that's why I conjectured about a fractured file list being downloaded and cached...
Hmmm...
:umm:

For Fetch...
did you enable it for any firewall that you may be running?
are you using PASV mode (passive) ?

Windows Commander...
Funny you mention that, Deb and I have personally used Windows Commanders for years and was one of the first Shareware programs we licensed...
I've been in contact with Christian Ghisler, author of Windows Commander, requesting the addition of SecureFTP capabilities being added to Windows Commander... I have offered our servers as a test bed, as this will ensure the highest rate of interoperability with our existing production SFTP servers... He is hoping to have this wrapped within the next 6 months... :)

Because I like it, too.

Ya know, I did set it to Passive Mode... But Fetch apparently needs to be restarted before Passive Mode can be used.
I'm gettin' in now...
OOOOoooohhhhh...
Same thing happens!
Fetch doesn't protest, and just overwrites...
Doesn't it seem, then, that the downloaded/cached file list must be corrupted somehow?
Or sumfin?

By nature, if you can see the file list and all seems kosher, then there is something misconfigured in the FTP client... There is no provision in the FTP server to stop you from overwriting a file...
I tried Windows Commander and CuteFTP and both of them smacked my hand before overwriting...
At this point, best I can say is:
a) go through your options with a fine tooth comb
b) contact the support team for the FTP client in question and have them perform testing

Me slow replyin'... The "new post" email somehow wound up in my spam folder. (more subtle weirdness...) :)

Already done...

I would... But since two different clients are now exhibiting the same behavior... **scratches head**
Maybe it's a system-level thing; I haven't upgraded the OS or changed any of my communications prefs or apps or TC/IP stuff... but I suppose there could be some sort of weird corruption somewhere. It's such a narrow little specific anomoly, though; I'd think corruption would have shown itself in some broader or more dramatic way.
Anywho... I'll let you know if I figger it out.
Thanks again!
