Hello everyone,

A friend of mine has a "dot.net" website. As a matter of fact, even used his last name as the "dot" part. For instance, let's call him "John Doe". Thus he has a website, "Doe.net".

He would like my help as a webmaster to help him create this website. I was wondering how does it work when it comes to "dot.net" websites ? I've had experiences with "dot.com" websites and even with AOL ones (ie. members.aol.com), but not with "dot.net".

So, how does it work with the transfer of files and with servers regarding "dot.net" websites ?

I'd appreciate it. Thanks !

Sincerely,
--Dan

Are you asking about microsoft's ".net (http://www.microsoft.com/net/defined/whatis.asp)" XML technologies or simply a .net domain name.

It sounds like you are simply asking about a yourdomain.net domain name and this functions and is setup exactly like any .com, .org, .info, .biz, or other unrestricted domain name (there are some country specific tld's which have special requirements, like nameservers on different subnets or citizenship in the particular country, but the .net has no special restrictions and no limitations).

Hmm, for instance, using a File Transfer Protocol, how do I know what to enter as the "dot.net" website's Host Name/Address, Host Type, User ID and Password ?

Dan -

a .net domain works the same way as a .com domain. Instead of ftp'ing to doe.com, you ftp to doe.net. Your friend, who presumably already has the site hosted, will have to provide you with their hosting account username and password.
