View Full Version : firewall and ftp to web site

I am using Dreamweaver to design my Web pages, I have McAfee Security Cener installed, which includes Virus Scan Online, Personal Firewall, and Privacy Service, and I am running Windows XP on a Thinkpad.

I hve been having a lot of trouble ftping to my web site, and was told that the problem is probably the firewall, but ironically, the problem seems to be everything BUT the firewall. That is, if nothing but the firewall is installed, I can ftp to site just fine, which agrees with McAfee's claims that Personal Firwall is compatible with ftp. If I install Privacy Services, I can't ftp even if I disable it (using the taskbar menu). And if I install Virus Scan on line, same deal. I have to completely uninstall both these services in order to ftp, a lot of time and trouble, of course, and then I have to reinstall when I am done ftping.

Anybody have a similar experience, and a solution?

Toni

Forgot to say that I have been through McAfee support and gave up in disgust when all I got was totally irrelevant and irrational answers.

Hmmmm. Try another product? :\ Seriously, I'm not very fond of McAfee.

Do you know of a better one? On the whole McAfee has done a great job for me, has caught zillions of viruses before they had a chance to do any harm, but the newer services don't seem all that functional.

I personally use Norton AV for anti-virus and ZoneAlarm for firewall... no problems with DreamWeaver.

I use Tiny Personal FireWall
http://tinysoftware.com

And my-eTrust anti-Virus
http://my-eTrust.com

On Win2K. They work well for me.

Hmmmm. I quit using Norton several years ago because I had constant problems with it! :) Maybe by now they have straightened themselves out? I'll consider this; I'm pretty frustrated with this situaiton with McAfee, and altho I usually avoid saying nasty things about anyone, the person at McAfee support gave me such idiotic answers -- he INSISTED that someone has hacked my password and wouldn't listen to anything else I had to say about when the ftp failures occur and that this has been going on for weeks and only occurs when McAfee is installed and doesn't occur otherwise and when I change my password it doesn't make any difference and and and..... -- that I ended up telling him, oh shut up. %)

thanks, Sheila, I'll look into those as well. I'm running XP so have to be a bit careful -- not all companies seem to be right on top of XP for their products.

My-eTrust anti-Virus (from Computer Associates) works fine on WinXp. They do have a firewall product also, but I'm not familiar with it.
