Does anyone know how to stop Dreamweaver 4 from repeatedly connecting and disconnecting every time it does a syncronisation preview and actual syncronisation? This not only wastes time, it has occasionally gotten me blocked by FQ.
TIA

Hmm. That feature annoys me too, but I don't see it making a new connection -- it repeatedly verifies the connection, though, for each folder/subfolder/sub-subfolder I'm synchronizing. (DW seems to do this anytime it goes back and forth between a server-based operation and a "local site"-based operation.)
I'd like to know if there's an answer as well, although it may well reside in the "sorry, that's just the way it is" file. I simply limit my synch to folders I know I've updated, and whenever possible I just click the Put button when I'm finished working on a page.
Why FQ would "block" this is an interesting question -- perhaps it's that super-secret anti-DOS program I was wondering about? ;)

(Just give me a way to permanently turn off DW's image map "visual aid" and I'll be happy)

FutureQuest doesn't "block" users, per se. However, the servers will only allow 3 concurrent connections per IP address and a total of 6 among multiple IPs per account. This is for both security reasons as well as resources as each server can only handle so many concurrent FTP logins, and we cannot have a just a few accounts using all available connections in a shared environment.
When you drop a connection as a result of a software problem or connectivity issue, many times the connection is not terminated at the server, immediately, and as result the open connection lingers for up to 10 minutes. Most likely this is the problem you are experiencing and you would have to wait for those connections to time out to allow new attempts.
As a note: Most problems involving failed directory listings, connection errors or time outs can be corrected by making sure that your FTP client is set to use "Pasv" or "Passive Transfer Mode". Although I'm not personally familiar with Dreamweaver, I believe that there is a setting through the Remote Site setup in Dreamweaver where you can set it to use "Passive FTP". You may want to try this and see if it helps at all.
For what it's worth--

The synchronization is time-consuming because for every file DW must read a file from the server to determine if it is new or older and then transfer the file based on this decision. I find it is much easier to just use the put (up arrow) function and put any files that have been edited.

That's easy, Just switch to the 'site files' view instead of the 'site map' view. :)

That shouldn't block an app that is simply re-querying the connection, but perhaps colulus is experiencing something else...there's a Preference setting in DW to close FTP connections after a certain amount of time, and perhaps by accident there's a very small (maybe even a decimal) number in there?

Actually, turning Passive FTP off is just the ticket! Thanks!

That toggles my view of the files in my site. What I want is to permanently turn off the display of imagemaps inside the Layout view of a single file -- with this turned on, an apparent DW bug causes the blue imagemap highlight to spill out over the entire page, obscuring other page elements and causing me to involuntarily say a nasty word. This in turn can cause the additional problem of frightening the cat.
