PHP and MySQL Intro

This section will contain many tutorials on the use of a mySQL Database from PHP on the FutureQuest® servers. Some of the topics covered may also be applicable to Perl, and possibly even other database engines, but here we will concentrate on the PHP and mySQL combination.

What is PHP?
PHP is a server side scripting language. It is not a browser dependant language like JavaScript, as PHP code is parsed on the server. The browser only sees the resulting HTML output from the script.

PHP is more than a simple scripting language, however - it has a full set of functions, making it quite powerful. It's most common use is in integrating a web site with a database.

There are a few things that need to be observed when using PHP and mySQL on the FutureQuest® servers. While we always attempt to give the most features possible, we also must keep security in mind due to the many users sharing the same server.

A lot of times, when you receive an error message, it is due to these security precautions. We will address most of the more common errors as well as various ways to work around them.

We will not cover all of PHP's functions, nor mySQL - for a complete function reference, see PHP's Function Reference, as well as the mySQL Documentation.

Recommended Reading: Core PHP Programming by Leon Atkinson
Intended for experienced developers, this guide explains PHP syntax, functions, sorting, searching, parsing, string evaluation, database integration, graphics generation, and web site design techniques. The CD-ROM contains a complete implementation of PHP 3, the book's code samples, and two web servers that support PHP: Apache for UNIX and Xitami for Windows NT.
