I actually hope to see this reply deleted by the owners when I awake, but for now I'll note the following clarification, without intent of insulting (singing to) the choir.

FQ doesn't reject the inbound mail until it receives the 'envelope-to' (RCPT TO:) data, which happens after the 'envelope-from' (MAIL) data. Only one of these must be in your domain; so you can use a "From: " of anybody@anywhere with a "To: " anybody@yourdomain and it will be accepted and passed.

Similarly, if you want to send through your domain both from and to other domains, you can do so a couple of different ways (which result in the same SMTP sequence), which I will not detail here.

In any event, I think that you have to POP from the same IP within a short time of getting a connection at all.

Maynard,

Of course you are correct about the way the message envelope works. But this person I was assisting (we exchanged some e-mail as well), doesn't seem to be at the level of wanting to understand how message envelopes work.

True, any mail sent to anyone@yourFQdomain.com will be accepted by the server, regardless of the From: field. I just assumed (and maybe I was wrong?) that this person wanted to send e-mail to someone else (not himself?). Anyhow, if the RCPT TO: field had been someone at his domain, I don't believe he would have gotten the error message he received?

However, I believe you are mistaken, that FQ requires any POP connection either before, after or during an attempt to send to the SMTP server. They do not use that type of authorization.

Here is what I wrote to you in e-mail, if you haven't checked your e-mail yet:

that error message is not coming from PandaMail.net. That error message is coming from the SMTP server at FutureQuest.

The address that you are putting in the From: field of your email must not be of the form
something@yourdomain.com

You have to send e-mail from your own domain in order to send them through the FQ SMTP servers

Hi Sheila,
1. Your original response was appropriate; I was just clarifying details for other general audience (i.e. you)
2. Your response did alert/inspire me to run the tests, since your observation that a 'from' requirement wasn't err'd until receiving the 'to'.

I [obviously] didn't bother to check for POP before SMTP; was just guessing I guess ;-} without having studied the server farm or the manual. ;)
