View Full Version : Strange Domain Transfer Problem

Hi,
I have just transferred my domain to FutureQuest.[nbsp][nbsp]Internic updated the whois database yesterday, but the actual DNS propagation took place today.[nbsp][nbsp]This morning, I successfully used my domain to access my site at FQ via both the browser and FTP.
However, when I try to use the domain to FTP to my site now, it goes back to my old host?![nbsp][nbsp]Accessing my site through the browser is fine.
I did a ping test and trace route, and both showed that the domain was pointing to FQ.
What is happenning?[nbsp][nbsp]Why does the domain point to my old host when I FTP?[nbsp][nbsp]FTP was working fine this morning.
Thanks.
Terence
P.S. I thought my first post would be over at the Open Discussions forum so everyone can welcome me. :)[nbsp][nbsp]Oh well...

Thanks for the welcome, Mike.
By the way, how do you get the text underneath the username to say "Site Owner" instead of "Visitor"? :)

Ugh... I'm very confused now. :(
I just tried to access my domain using my browser, and it pointed to my old host?![nbsp][nbsp]I did a ping and traceroute and they both show that my domain is pointing to my old host.[nbsp][nbsp]This wasn't the case a few hours ago.
I then used the online trace route utility at Network-Tools.com, and it still traces my domain to FutureQuest.
I am on a school network.[nbsp][nbsp]Is this a problem with my local network?

Someone'll come along and fix your user status, Terrence.
Now, the DNS problem - you JUST mentioned the school network thing - it's likely you're going through a cache or proxy server which is caching the old IP address...[nbsp][nbsp]It can take up to a week (!!) before it may flush out.[nbsp][nbsp]:(

That's what I thought at first.[nbsp][nbsp]But how come everything worked perfectly in the morning, then FTP stopped working in the afternoon, and now everything points to my old host?
Also, does an FTP client access the DNS records different from the browser?
Finally, does that mean that the rest of the world (those who are not behind a cache or proxy server) can access my site at FQ?
Thanks Charles.

Actually, my account at my old host is still active, so you won't see any differences on the front page.[nbsp][nbsp]The easiest way to check is to go to http://freesources.com/Daily_Freebies/.
Can you tell me if the lastest news item is July 16, or July 11?
If it's July 16, then it's the old host.[nbsp][nbsp]If it's July 11, then it's FutureQuest.
Thanks.
Terence
