View Full Version : Telnet
Does anyone know of an inexpensice or free Telnet program?
I can't seem to find a good one that isn't expensive.
You may want to check out this thread.. http://www.aota.net/ubb/Forum14/HTML/000003.html there are a couple of different suggestions in there...
I prefer SecureCRT but inexpensive it's not:/
Hope it helps

This is the one I'm using for my few telnet sessions. I can use
ALT-1 for F1
ALT-2 for F2
etc.
and finally use all these things like "Midnight Commander", editors, etc.

Token 2 ( http://www.ee.inha.ac.kr/~choung/eng/ ) is another Telnet client. Non-SSH, but free and rated 5 cows in Tucows and 5 stars in ZDNet. Versions in Korean and English.

Windows 2000 actually comes with a half-way decent telnet client now - it is capable of displaying colors, unlike the previous built-in clients in 9x... and naturally it's free ;)
Start --> Run --> "telnet.exe"

Justin,
Under Win 98, I got a functional telnet client following the method you mentioned.[nbsp][nbsp]However, in Win 2000 I get what looks like just a DOS window with a "Microsoft Telnet >" prompt and no menu of any sort.[nbsp][nbsp]Typing telnet://domain.com into the browser location bar brings up a HyperTerminal telnet client that looks functional, although extremely miniscule by default.
Is that the same as your setup?[nbsp][nbsp]The reason I'm curious is that it seems Microsoft really shortchanged the OEM Win 2000 setups.[nbsp][nbsp]For instance, whenever I am prompted to install a language pack from the Win 2000 "CD" it looks in the language directory and can't find the files it thinks are there.[nbsp][nbsp]Still, I can hardly complain as Win 2000 is infinitely better than any previous Microsoft OS.

The newer telnet isn't the same as in 9x - at the prompt, type a ? and enter for help. To connect to your site, just type:
</font><font face="Courier" size="3">
open yourdomain.com
</font><font face="Verdana, Arial" size="2">
It will log you in to the server, prompting for your username/password. Way better than HyperTerm etc...
