View Full Version : Free Internet access account (and ads) on Altavista

I just saw the CEO of Altavista on a financial news program talking about their free Internet access deal.
I have always kept a free Internet access account with NetZero, as a backup for when Bellsouth goes down. I also have had problems with maintaining the connection on the free NetZero account.
I just signed up for a free Altavista Internet access account and the connection speeds are the same as on my Bellsouth account and I have not been 'dropped' yet.
I have a big enough monitor and am using a high enough resolution to make the ad thingy be a manageable size.
This seems to be a good alternative for a second ISP account. If you are bothered by the ads... don't bother signing up.
Free is good!!

Cool, thanks for the link. I think I am gonna sign up myself.
BTW: I am on bellsouth too, not too bad speed or downtime, but try finding ANYTHING (like a friggin Member Services page to change your free e-mail alias) on their BellSouth Buzz page! And then try calling their tech support for the bellsouth roaming number (99.9% automated, and probably one person working the lines because you wait about 30-40 minutes on evenings for a real person... once you get through the electronic maze). I gripe alot about BS (nice initials too!) but I would NEVER use AOL or Mindspring (MindSpr. blocks Port 25).
Thanks for letting me vent...[nbsp]

I thought I was a dummy... I cannot navigate that slow a** Bellsouth site and find what I am looking for. That has got to be one of the worst on the Internet. (Bellsouth.com runs a close second)

I have to agree as far as Bell South's pages go (and I'm not even a customer of theirs). I went to their site recently to look for info on what (if any) type of web page is included in their dial up accounts. (I was offering assistance in helping them learn about setting up a web page.)
Suffice it to say, I left their page confused about whether any web page comes with their dial up account or not (I was suspecting not).
That said, I think it is the new style of web pages in general. I hate what DejaNews did to their page when they changed it to Deja.com. Horrible colors, hard to find anything. Yuck.

As I recall (from when I used to be able to find anything on their site) they do not offer free home pages (I am guessing from memory) I think that it cost 2.95 per month or something like that to get a home page.
Regards,
Mike
PS Altavista free Internet access account has interferred with my 'default' DUN settings.

DUN settings? What are those?
Do you reccomend that I should sign up for an account? I was just going to...

DUN is your Dial-Up Networking settings.[nbsp][nbsp]I can only presume that Altavista modified the default DNS settings, perhaps the WINS configuration as well, all of which you can find in Start/Settings/Control Panel/Network/TCP-IP
Talking about Deja and Mindspring, though, I was wondering about design... so I'll go start a new thread somewhere...
