View Full Version : InterNIC
Hi everyone ... I signed up last week and InterNIC still hasn't transfered my domain! http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif I got that verification message and sent right away to "notify@internic.net". This morning, I was wondering if I had done that wrong so I re-sent the verification message this time to "hostmaster@internic.net". Hopefully it's going to be transfered soon since I'm loosing a lot of visitors and ad revenues from this downtime. Does anyone here have any insight for me regarding these InterNIC problems? The InterNIC site says modifacations take between 24 and 48 hours so now I'm getting worried after a week. Should I try filling out a modifaction request myself since I saw all the new FQuest fields in my verify message? Or, would that be a bad move? I don't know, hopefully re-sending to hostmaster@internic.net did the trick and I'll be back in business. If anyone has some advice, help me out! Thanks! -Eric Sturgeon

Internic can be such a pain in the a$$ at times... It looks like you did everything correctly...
I am showing your Internic tracking number to still be open [NIC-981212.16996]...
Status: Open
12/12 - Initial Submission
12/19 - Following Submission (this is the one that should process the transfer acknowledgement, if it was 12/12, then there would be cause for alarm...)
12/12 - InterNIC Response
Internic is *way* behind on transfers, and I've seen up to 14 days for a transfer to be completed... You may want to call Internic directly and try to urge them along on this... We cannot do this for you, as we are in no way authoritive for your domain... http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif

InterNIC has been unreasonably slow recently. But, I guess they get beat down and hyped up for the holidays just the same as everyone else. My last domain required a phone call to get anything done there. Ah well.

I have a feeling this trend is actually going to get worse for Internic. The "internet real estate" is becoming the new booming business for the net. They've got to be getting bogged down with requests and transfers.
That's take. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

ppsstt guess what-- ewsonline.com was validated today... should be officially transferred by morning http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
Yes, I'm so excited! I checked the InterNIC record for ewsonline.com today and I see that it's been updated for the new Future Quest server. (MY HOME!) But, I'm a lil confused because when I visit ewsonline.com I still get the "forbidden" messages on all pages. What does this mean? My old host was CommuniTech, do they have to do anything to make it so EWS pages are accessed on my new Future Quest server instead of the CommuniTech server which results in forbidden messages? Or will InterNIC just COMPLETE this transfer themselves without any action by the previous technical/zone contact?
Thanks! -Eric Sturgeon

Welcome to the wonderful phenomenon, called 'DNS Propagation'...
It's like a wave that flows across the internet as your 'New Home' is updated in the DNS servers...
This process can take anywhere from 2 days, up to 2 weeks for others...
Consider your domain to live in Purgatory at the moment... It's a very common thing, cause DNS works by 'caching' hostnames-->IP addresses... You will probably be the last to update, since you keep *your* DNS server primed with the old number... http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif
In conclusion: DNS propagation just plain sucks...

It's a matter of DNS propagation...
In 'simplistic' terms.... Imagine viewing a web page in your browser.. then surfing elsewhere.. then coming back to the page you first viewed.. odds are you wouldn't see any new additions to the page until you reload/refresh it...
Why? Because the page is in your cache memory.
Well this is kind of the same way... your ISP has a DNS cache... and until it is 'refreshed' you wont see the new site...
We often refer to it as "waiting for the Internet to reboot"

thanks for answering so quickly. both of you! hehe http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif When I called InterNIC the other day urging them to transfer my domain the guy I talked to mentioned something about the DNS Propagation you're talking about. He said it should take between 24 and 48 hours. Oh Well. So, let me get this straight. It has nothing to do with my old host, right? And, all I can do is wait for the cache of the Internet to be rebooted? If this right, I get it. thanks for the insight. I love the analogies! http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif I've been through hell, now I'm stuck in purgatory, and I can't wait to make it to heaven at future quest!

Let me just reach behind the back of the Internet and press the POWER button and reboot it...
BOOOOOONNNNGGGGGG......
There, that should do it.
Everybody needs a reboot once in a while, unless you're running Linux http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

EEEEaaaaassshhhhh, Want to see the frustration that I encounter with Internic... And I have to explain to the customer why their domain hasn't transferred yet (more often then I care to mention)...
The domain has been changed to "acme.com" to protect the innocent... This was a transfer I started 12/8...

whoa, this is weird. overall, it's good news. My traffic stats show I got 15,000 page hits yesterday. I checked it out and I found that I still get forbidden messages from the old server when I use my local ISP (main connection) but when I use AOL I can access ewsonline.com on FutureQuest although a few pages here and there still deliver forbidden pages. I think I'm getting the CGI scripts to work too. Why would one ISP access my web site on the new server but another ISP access it on the old server? Is there something that has to be done to any records or is this just the ISP's cache for all it's customers needing to be updated? It's the same story with my e-mail forwarding accounts. It works for either the old service or the new service. Strange.
or is this just the ISP's cache for all it's customers needing to be updated?
That's about the jist of it... as their cache updates they'll see your current site.. tis a matter of waiting
