We had a huge jump in visitors today, according to Stats. We've been averaging 350 a day; low of 276, high of 450. April 1, it jumped to 565 -- and we were number 1 (for "ballet") in Excite (up from 30), which also feeds AOLNetfind and Webcrawler.
This all seemed to make sense, until I checked the "refers" page in the stats, and there were only 25 referrals each from Excite and AOL. Counting all the referrals - most in the 1s and 2s -- there were 100 referrals.
So my question to all ye Wise Ones is:
Where did they come from?
Thanks.

Are you looking at "Hits" or "Page Views" or "Sessions"? Here's why I ask:
Hits: Number of file accesses. Meaning, you have 1 html page with 10 graphics, that's 11 hits.
Page Views: Actual HTML page accesses (I think http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif)
Sessions: If you access a page, then move around through the site, that's one session until you leave and come back.
If you go by hits that is not an accurate count. Most sites rate themselves by how many pageviews they get. That is the best way IMO because if you go by sessions, they may have stayed at your site for a while visiting many areas - so pageviews shows how many individual web pages were accessed.
Hope this helps http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Also, if you are looking at the "Top 30 Referers" you will only see the top 30 - click on "More Details" to see them all http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Thanks, Justin. It was Sessions, but the Pageviews and Hits are proportionally higher. (Those three, I know. I've never quite figured out the difference between "Files" and "Pageviews," though.)
I don't like to count Hits, because I have a UBB and, because of the images, each time they hit a page, it probably causes six hits.

Files includes all files, cgi, html, php, images, etc... Pageviews includes only pages like html (not sure whether it counts php or cgi generated pages tho)
