View Full Version : Keyword focus for Search Engines...

Most people have a scattered focus when prepping for search engine readiness.

The focus should be on keywords and not which tricks work. The fact is the search engines are going to continue tweaking their algorithms and a trick [or technique] that once worked to maintain top ranking won't after the change.

But if you sit down before creating or changing your site and write out 8 very important keywords as they relate to your site. Starting with the code of your page from top to bottom:
1. Title tag: Have 1-4 [if able all 8] keywords listed with the most important listed first.
2. Meta tags: Description should have a minimum of 4 keywords used [if able all 8] with up to 150 characters used [characters include letters, punctuation and symbols].

3. Have at least one keyword in all of your graphics Alt tag.

4. Organize your page with comment tags throughout your pages, putting keywords in them too. If you use the comment tags to organize your HTML, you'll find it is easier to update your pages and when the search engines decide to no longer look at them...you won't be affected.

5. Try and keep the pages short. Use doorway pages [WITHOUT SPAMMING] if you're unable to keep your pages within 468 pixels.

This is a start...there's a lot more to it...but we must start somewhere. I've heard many people cringe at the thought of redoing metatags, working on the behind the scenes code takes away from their actual marketing and promotion.

I work 8 hours a day at CBS Sportsline doing that very thing, I am excited to come home to then work on clients' pages, too. I love it. The research, creativeness and beating the odds is exhilerating to me. ***I accept credit cards and will accept monthly payments... [[[end of shameless ad]]] http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

This should be a good start for building this promotion discussion file. http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

Hey Hearts...thanks for the reply. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Spamming techniques used with doorways can be, but not limited to:

1. Creating a page that has nothing to do with your site.
2. Keyword stuffing...using irrelevant keywords or overusing a keyword in the tags.
3. Using the small or hidden, repetitive keywords.

Search engine spamming will get you penalized [where you're site gets bottom of the barrel ratings] or kicked out of the search engines databases.

Some search engines are considering or have already made multiple domains with the same IP address a form of spamming.

Hope that helps. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

I hope that they don't end up considering multiple domain names on a single IP a form of spamming. I mean, that would cause problems for those of us here at FQ, not to mention encourage the overuse of already scarce IP addresses (heh... I've gone from environmentalist to network conservationalist http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif )

Hey, sorry it took me a bit to get a response. I wanted to check facts to make sure I didn't error in my earlier post...

So here's the fat on the story....There have been some reported issues where one site will become a known spammer to the engines and others sharing the same IP or domain have felt penalty [lower ratings, no submission in to the database, etc...]. This has mainly happened with sites that have been on the free sites, such as Geocities, Tripod, etc...

I don't see this being a problem with Future Quest, currently. I know they have rules against spamming [though i don't recall if it's against search engine spamming]. I have faith that they'd not allow any site to interfer with the rest of the community.

There has been word that some of the search engines were considering penalizing sites that have more than one page pointing to the same IP. There has not been action taken and chances are there won't be. For the same reason as mentioned by Jacob. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Hopefully that clears up my idea-scrunching post from before. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
