I have always wanted a really cool smilie face for the AOTA Forums and the following image has always conjured up...

http://www.aota.net/Face.jpg

For those of you that know Douglas Adams, this is from his excellent series 'Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy'...[nbsp][nbsp]One of my favorite books when I was younger...

Could someone please take a moment to see if it's feasable to iconize it...[nbsp][nbsp]I would love to see this new smilie added to our icon set for replacing - :p

Thanks!

"And wow! Hey! What's this thing coming towards me very fast? Very very fast. So big and flat and round, it needs a big wide sounding word like... ow... ound... round... ground! That's it! That's a good name - ground!
I wonder if it will be friends with me?"

PS: one of my favorite lines from the 'HHGTTG' :)

You want that as a smiley ie .gif for ubb or an .ico ?

He's looking for a gif for the UBB :)

Hehe... In the midst of my Christmas shopping this year I noticed that they'd reissued the "complete" HHGTTG anthology in one book, and that it was 40% of at Barnes and Noble. I was thinking of picking it up and getting reacquainted with the series - and now that I read the quote Terra just posted, I think I'll head back this weekend.

Or maybe I'll just buy the audiobook ;)

That thing is impossible to make it look good when it is resized!!!

The best I could get it look would be 30x23 pixels, but I figure that is too big, tho. Did you try posting at the UBB UBB?

I always wanted a pair of those sunglasses that would go completely dark so I wouldn't have to bothered with the dangerous and scary things that were heading towards me . . .[nbsp]

PS - for grownups who loved Hitchhiker's et al - check out the new Harry Potter series; I managed to sneak the three volumes avail in the US (one by one, of course) away from my 9 year old daughter while we drove to NY state and back over vacation - they are excellent, and not "just for kids!"

sheila

Well, Hitchhiker's is cool and all, but maybe simplifying the graphic would be better. What about loosing the arms and[nbsp][nbsp]just making it basically a face with a tongue coming out?

Or, what about that fairly common graphic of the big, fat lips with the tongue coming out?

Terra
01-06-2000, 12:28 AM
Hehehe,

I already tried trading off the eyes for the arms... ;)

Possibly loosing a couple teeth, and maybe a smaller open mouth... :þ

I think this is a slightly better version:

http://www.dragonbear.com/images/face2.gif

old version:

http://www.dragonbear.com/images/face.gif

both of those were 15 x 15
and new version with arms (21 wide x 15 high):

http://www.dragonbear.com/images/face3.gif

and shaded new version with arms (also 21 x 15):

http://www.dragonbear.com/images/face4.gif

I like it with the eyes, but I prefer the detail of #4.[nbsp][nbsp]Could they be combined?[nbsp][nbsp]Would that be an insult to the two artists in question?[nbsp][nbsp]:)

Dtail

edit: For a fair comparison of detail, we really should see them on the same background...

Actually, looking at them again, I do kinda like the #4 above, w/o the eyes... hm... weird...

With permission I'd love to add that for the :þ - I didn't have time to draw a :þ smiley so I just set it up for the :þ... but a graphic would be much nicer :)

wow, guys, thanks for such nice compliments! feel free to send me your graphics requests any time! (MOSTLY KIDDING: guess how much real-world work I did this morning!)

I also like #4 best...without the arms it looks too much like a stuffed olive with the pimento falling out ;)

BTW, re: HHGTTG--My sister and bro-in-law named their daughter Trillian. You know, Zaphod Beeblebrox's girlfriend from the first book? I just ROFL when I heard THAT!

Whoops, now that I'm back: of course permission granted![nbsp][nbsp]Sorry if you were waiting on that: I only have a 56K modem at home (and I do have two kids) so all my weekday web-walking is done at work (tongue-twister there!).

Why not user preferences where we can all upload our own images and define our own hot keys for them? You could add it to our cookies yes? This way upon registration we could add/delete whatever we liked and everyone would have their own unique set of images etc to make for a very colorful message forum.[nbsp][nbsp]Ohhhh Justin Puuuulllllleeeeesss?

Why don't I download mod_telepathy instead? I'm sure TeRRa will install it into the core - this way we don't even have to actually "click" or "type" things, we can just think them. Our preferences will automatically update according to our mood, and posts will come naturally.

You think that will work instead? :P

Oh, wait, according to the documentation, mod_telepathy isn't compatible with Netscape or Opera - it's an IE only thing.

/me runs far far away ;)

Oh, wait, according to the documentation, mod_telepathy isn't compatible with Netscape or Opera - it's an IE only thing. Must be Bill Gates' new market research strategy.[nbsp][nbsp]:)[nbsp][nbsp]I guess checking on what software people have installed via their modems didn't go over too well.[nbsp][nbsp]I will sniff out a conspiracy before the day is over...

Anyone worried?

Anyone know who designed the HHGTTG original?

Honestly though, I don't the designer/illustrator would mind if we use it inconized to 15x15 in a message board? What damage would it do to them? They'd only send notice (if they even ever saw it) if they were a bunch of freaks who need to get --er nevermind, going to far there. ;)

LOL![nbsp][nbsp]Tatu -- Behave yourself!

As far as the copyright issue... I assume they could possibly become upset about it -- It is in fact their &quot;lil guy&quot; we &quot;swiped&quot; <img src="http://www.aota.net/ubb/confuse.gif" alt=":/" width=15 height=15>[nbsp][nbsp]If we were to receive notice I would promptly remove the image.
