View Full Version : Autoresponder 101
Congratulations on the marriage.
Following your instructions, I thought I set up an autoresponder on the "info" email address, but it doesn't seem to work.
Am I missing something?

Hello Tom,
Linux/Unix in general is **very** sensative to 'CRLF' in files... (Carriage-Return Line-Feed) psst: there is a rant on this in the MAC forum where I vented a bit on this... http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
I have looked at your .qmail-info and I am assuming that you edited with MS notepad or similiar... At this point you have 2 options:
1) re-upload the file via FTP in 'ASCII' mode, this will convert the 'CRLF' to 'LF'
2) Telnet/SSH into your account and type $stripcr .qmail-info
Either of the 2 will get you squared away... For a really great MS Windows editor, you may want to toss notepad and use UltraEdit-32 (awesome program)...

Okay. I telnetted in just fine and got it to work. Just getting to the correct directory took a while. ;-) Is that a Linux prompt I'm playing with?
It now works, but the subject doesn't appear as the email subject - it appears as the first line in the email. Is this WAD?

'$' is the Linux BASH Telnet prompt... You have a very capable server at your fingertips... http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
info.txt is plagued by 'CRLF', and the autorespond program will not parse it correctly...
Please re-read Items 1 and 2 from above... It will fix your problem...

Stabbing wildly here - "working as designed"?

Sorry -
WAD = Working As Designed.
Oh - I did run the CR stripper from Telnet and it made the program begin to work. But not the subject in the proper place. Maybe I can run the stripper again.
For editing, I use the freeware EditPad - yet another solid text editor.

Hey Tom,
We just tested it and it all looks fine... Subject is in the right place etc....
Did you find the problem and fix it or???
At any rate.. all is well http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

I wondered who was messin' with me when that extra autoreply came in this morning! :-)
Yah, I figured it all out - typing in that Telnet/Linux console takes me back to whatever gawdawful computer we used in engineering school 20 years ago... <g> You know - the fancy one with black & white terminals? Not the big one that used data cards...
