View Full Version : FQuest Alert: HDLC Service Outage

Today FutureQuest has suffered the worst outage to date...
The problem was traced to the Bell South T-1 HDLC circuits... The outage was completely out of our control as we had to wait on the Phone company to make repairs in their facility...
Making matters worse was that most of their technicians were gone for the Christmas holiday weekend... It has been a long frustrating day for us, waiting for the line to become unsevered... Sort of like waiting for your electricity to come back on after a hurricane...
The server has been up all day -- unfortunately noone (not even us) could get to it due to downed equipment at the **phone company**...
I am glad to see that everything is finally back up... Many changes/improvements are going to happen very soon to our network as a result to this... We are on a migration path to getting located in a major Orlando NOC that is being fed by OC-12 lines... http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
We are committed to excellence in service and design, and are doing everything possible to never sway from that path... Today was a huge setback for us, and has caused us to rethink our connectivity... We hope to be backed by dual-SONET OC-12's in 4 months and it would take Florida falling off the United States to sever those lines... http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
Please bear with us as we grow and make the necessary adjustments to facilitate your online presence...

I was thinking more of getting some sleep... It's been a ***very LONG*** day, I am most frustrated at the phone companies sluggish movements all day... Sometimes I think they are government owned... http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif
You would think that the T-1's would have a high priority to fix at over $3000/month... Hmmph - I felt like I was waiting to get a second phone line repaired... http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif

acckkk! tequila..ok but if you're ever in Vegas playing blackjack don't do shots of gold at 6 a.m...umm not that I would do that LOL
ROFL!!!
And I never thought of either of us as drinkers really... we've had two wine coolers in the fridge forever ...
Ya'all think it would really help our ability to serve if we started drinking more often?
I think I'll stick to the egg nog http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
You guys are great.. thanks for the tremendous amount of understanding..

Looks like STATS are going to be delayed until mid-afternoon tomorrow... I was cutoff from the server, and was unable to finish programming the new log maintenance routines... I am at 30% completion of them and it will be high priority for me tonight to get finished...

All I could think this afternoon was "uh oh" - I had just finished bragging about you to some co-workers. BUT, traceroute clearly showed where the problem was: SPRINT

Actually - CCTech, if it makes you feel any ounce of joy to know it was a great help to me not having access to my site. http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif If that is ever possible.
BECAUSE, I got out of the house today, went shopping and bought some stuff to organize the house a little more. While out and away from my baby ...errr...the computer, http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif I was able to clear my head of anguished troubles that I couldn't solve on my site. One of them being the javascript dilemna and other offline database and layout problems I'd been pushing my way to fix.
Forced off the computer and forced to clear my mind...problems all solved. So, tanks buddy! http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Those wascally phone companies! Must be a disease - that happened to my ISP last week.
Don't you have a mirror in Arkansas that would've stepped up in the outage, or am I thinking of something else?
Not a mirror but a secondary Name Server and backup device...
Doesn't help for situations like this one... but the plans in that are now in the works should help http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
Thanks you guys/gals http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

I'm just curious: When and how would the Arkansas server step up and take over?

I'd just like to say that the difference in the way FutureQuest handles a problem -- hey, guys, this what happened, why, what we did, and how we plan to avoid it in the future -- and the rest of the world -- what problem? Nobody else has mentioned anything. Is your computer plugged in? What modem do you use? Check to make sure the capslock isn't down, etcetera -- is a wonderful testament to the way they view service. Thanks.
alexandra
It's not a mirrored server... they in no way come into play if we are out of service.
They provide a secondary name server for us that is in a different area then us which helps for DNS lookups...
We also backup files to their server.. to help against any major dataloss.. we would only utilize those backups if a serious loss was incurred...
Hope this helps
