I normally wait for Andrew to return from the server room and allow him the 'privilege' of posting these messages.. I just decided to go ahead and do it w/o him tonight.

I do not, as of yet, have all of the details for what exactly caused us to go down today... he will have that information when he returns. What I do know is that we were down for around two hours.

I believe it went down around 3:25pm EST and Andrew got it back up and running at about 5:30pm EST.

Like I said, I am not sure yet what exactly took it down.. but I do know why it took so long to bring it back up, and I know that the reason is my fault.

I'm sure we could come up with some hyped reasons for it.. but I'd rather not. So in all fairness to you guys and to Andrew... I will tell you that we did something today we hadn't done before. We both left the office for about 3 hours, we normally only leave separatly to ensure the server is being watched by a human 24/7. It seems that within the first half hour of us being gone it went down. When we returned.. of course all the 'red lights' were on and we knew we had been 'caught'. http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif

As such I will be doing everything I can to make it up to all of you... and sincerely hope this hasn't caused too many problems.

I've learned a lesson today.

Deb

Deb, I can't believe that on the last Sunday before Christmas that you and Andrew could make such a stupid decision as to leave the office (which we all know is your home) to go do something together. (hope you can read the sarcasm that I wrote). I mean, after all, FutureQuest should be like an IV in your arm and you should be chained to the chair and never never never be able to leave.

Get a clue and do the following (for real this time http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif )

1) Have a seat, open a beer (or other beverage of your choice).
2) Wipe the sweat off of your head.
3) Pat yourself on the back for having a brand new server that has run for 3 weeks or so without a major hitch.
4) Understand that there are LOTS of people out here who think that you're doing a pretty DAM* good job.
5) Repeat steps 1 through 4 as ofter as necessary until you realize that SHI* happens and that sometimes you and that special someone need a little time to themselves.

Amendment 1) Obviously if this happened all the time, then you wouldn't have a leg to stand on (or server http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif ).

Sorry, I hated seeing you down yourselves

(PS, did you ever send me the link to those forums) http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

Between the hours of 3:24pm and 5:30pm EST - the server had crashed...

I have isolated the 'customer' responsible for this - and they have been notified that their 'CGI-BIN' capability has been disabled as of 11:46pm EST...

As this is a community server, the servers operation for the many - far outweighs accomodating the one... I have spent the last 6 hours trying to figure out a way to accomodate this particular customers needs -- in the end, the only accomodation I could make was to totally disable his 'CGI-BIN' capability...

I apologize for the extended blackout period, and will not make the same mistake again... My confidence in the server running bulletproof, since it came online - was today's undoing... Murphy's Law once again has reared it's ugly head - and proven once again that running a server, and having a life don't mix very well... http://www.aota.net/ubb/frown.gif

On a lighter note - it's now time to send some positive responses to over 80 emails replying simply -- 'Yes, good news - the server is back online'... http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif
