like how crowded should I let my hd get before I really have to like get a bigger one. Like I -lan to get a way bigger one but of course I need to have the money. Right now man we have a piddly 2.1 gigs and um we got just over 500 megs left on it which is like not kewl - like how muchg smaller can the leftovers get before I really gotta like get a bigger one - like man I be pssin if this thing crashes, Actually we got a zip drive recently and freed up a ton of space that way and we was also anticipating having to replace the hd (no room in the cpu for a second one - Like I totaly need a really huge puter but thats even more money!) like um backing up stuff just ins't practical on thjose piddly floppies - anyway man so like er "how low can I go?"

My machine had a 2.1gb originally too, we've got about 150MB left on it. It still works as well as it ever did, albeit a bit slower. I know this doesn't answer your question very well tho, sorry...

Well, you have a couple of options. If you run Win95 OSR2 or Win 98, you could setup FAT32. This will usually give you much more space. Another option is to back up all the stuff you want to keep, and re-load your HD. If you install software, then delete it, sometimes windows doesn't remove all the files. I do a re-install every 6 months or so. Another something to try is deleting the files in your TEMP directories. (usually c:\temp or c:\windows\temp) All of this assumes you have an IBM compatible machine.

If you have a Staples near you, they have a 10 GIG Maxtor for $289 or $259 with a $50.00 rebate (at least they did a week ago).

My 2 cents worth

Mike

When you say you do a reinstall every 6 months, do you mean that you delete all programs with only windows left on then reinstall everything beck on?

I keep my hd pretty spotless by manually going thru all my files and weeding out the useless old stuff every so often and checking after I uninstall anything - cuz ti generally leaves whole folders behind even yeesh! like um didnt I uninstall that silly thing. if i'm really feeling patient (and bored) I'll actually go theu the windows registry and clean it up - also PC Medic is a great help with odd files and stuff. Anyway . . . I been thinking for months acually gee man I'd really love to update myy system qand give myself room to expand - and then I read further down about yeesh theyre cokming out with 800 mhz K 7's - I mean like here I am running my 133 cyrix media GX - which does great still - hwy chuck a perfectly good processer - but then my mouth starts watering over that much speed haha -

anyways - like eventually of course I need a new system - heck this one is 2 years old already haha - so looking towards maybe upgrading next year hmm I dunno - is it cheaper to just build your own or should I just break down and by some prefab system (with lots of room to add my own crap in there to sutomize the dern thing cuz they never have everything I really reall want in them!)
I am very attatched to my present computer and it isnt quite obsolete yet - but I feel a bit cramped and well just plain greedy.
oh yeh duh - thanx for the hd tuips good to know I an let thiw thing fill up a bit - I did notice since I installed like 300 mgs of new progrmazs it runs a bit slower (grrr!)
and I'm not done Linda needs various components of MS Office to work at home over the semester break - since all the documents she has been working on at work are like on access and powerpoint and publisher and such there's a good chunk of space. *sigh*
wow 10 gigs of hd man thats like going from a room it he attack to a manshin hahaha!
but I wonder if I should just use it as an excuse to upgrade the whoole system and not just the hd hehehe like I said i'm greddy

10 gig for $289?!?!?!?
man! gotta love those US prices !!!!
I think we paid about that much for our 2.3 gig HD up here in the frosty north!

and 800 mhz... don't get Techie started! He's still happy having gone from our 386 (yes, that's not a typo, we still have the dino in our closet!) to a 266mhz Pentium.
Sigh, one can never "keep up" with these puters, hunh?
