View Full Version : Home-stretch UBB setup questions

I'm almost there![nbsp][nbsp]I have the UBB forum working, I've posted test messages, and it looks great (I changed the color scheme).[nbsp][nbsp]Here's the URL:
http://xchildpastlives.futurequest.net/cgi-bin/ubb/Ultimate.cgi
But I have a few problems yet to solve.[nbsp][nbsp]
1)[nbsp][nbsp]How do I change the setup so the registration is NOT required?[nbsp][nbsp]This is very important to me, and I know it's possible.[nbsp][nbsp]I just don't see any easy way to do it.
2)[nbsp][nbsp]How can I change the size of the graphics that show up on the pages?[nbsp][nbsp]I'd like to design and add some that are a little larger -- especailly the Post and Topic buttons.
3)[nbsp][nbsp]Can I add text to the top of the pages.[nbsp][nbsp]I'd like to give a few quick directions to people who are seeing the board for the first time.
4)[nbsp][nbsp]Can I turn off frames?[nbsp][nbsp]I'm afraid that some of my viewers won't have advanced browsers, and I don't want to thrwart their participation.
Thank you,
Steve

1) For now, you'll just need to change all active Forums to allow non-registerd posting, in Forum Variables through your control panel.[nbsp][nbsp]Ted is building in the ability to remove all references to registration (in the process loosing message edit and user profile options) in version 5.36.
2) You can switch out the graphics as you wish, as they aren't locked to a width or height.
3) Yes, you can add a header and a footer - see General Variables.
4) Um, the UBB doesn't use frames...

Thanks for the tips.[nbsp][nbsp]With your encouragement I found the place to open forums for unregistered users.[nbsp][nbsp]I was expecting a global setting.[nbsp][nbsp]I changed it and it worked.
Sorry about the frames questions. :o[nbsp][nbsp]I was looking at the command pages, which are framed.
I've already used the heading to put up my logo.[nbsp][nbsp]I guess what my question really was is this:[nbsp][nbsp]can I edit the HTML of the main forum pages, especially the top page?[nbsp][nbsp]I don't know enough about CGI to know how to do that.[nbsp][nbsp]I am comfortable with HTML, though.[nbsp][nbsp]What file would I look for?
Here are two more small questions:
1)[nbsp][nbsp]I changed my username and password (I searched and found and old message by Deb on how to do it).[nbsp][nbsp]But now the Admin5 name is stuck in all of the admin screens.[nbsp][nbsp]I have to manually replaced it each time, which is a pain![nbsp][nbsp]How do I get my new username and password to automagically appear in those screens?[nbsp][nbsp]Does it mean I have to selectively delete a cookie?[nbsp][nbsp]Where do I find cookies in Windows95?
2)[nbsp][nbsp]I deleted all of my first test messages, but they still show up in place of my new test messages.[nbsp][nbsp]Yes, I hit F5 to refresh, and they still come up.[nbsp][nbsp]How can I get rid of them?
Thank you for your help.[nbsp][nbsp]I REALLY appreciate having a place to get answers to these questions.

1) I'm assuming this is the cookie you mean.[nbsp][nbsp]Just find the cookie on your computer and delete it.[nbsp][nbsp]Then go to preferences and select set cookie one year bit.
2)In the admin area try update threads. Then make sure you are not caching then try return to the forum in question.

Minor correction to #1 - just close your browser (not just that one window, the whole program, every window), then come back with your new profile, that will clear the CP cookie.
Yes, it is possible to change the formatting of the header, but unless you are willing to poke around the CGI a bit, it's not that easy.
