View Full Version : Too many tables?
Before I do anymore.. I notice when I pull up the page I am working on, there is a hesitation and then it seems to all load at once rather than loading progressively from the beginning. Actually I notice it on all of my pages but this one is worse. Time-wise to load, may or may not be any different than normal but if nothing else, it "seems" slower.
Am I embedding too many tables?..I mean there's not much on the page and it should load quick. I am probably doing something the hard way while trying to accomplish what you will see and if someone could take a look, it would be greatly appreciated.

I too wonder this with my pages. You should see my pages, I think I am addicted to tables... they are so wonderful and much better then frames. In fact, I think I get high using tables lol! :)
Sometimes my page, www.bid4beanies.com (http://www.bid4beanies.com) , comes out all weird with everything screwed up, then when I reload it shows up normal. This also happens to me with Network Polutions website every once in a blue moon.
I don't think that your page stalls or anything, and I wouldn't say that you have too many tables. What do you think about my website? Should I cut down or go cold turkey?

Tables - hehe:)
In a browser, it will not show anything inside a table until it comes accross the </table>. So if your whole site is wrapped inside a table, it won't show until it's fully loaded.
Notice that on this UBB, each post is now in a separate table instead of all being in one, so that it appears to load quicker - each reply pops up as soon as it's loaded:)
This can be to your advantage if you use banner ads - place a banner at the top of the page before the table, then the rest of the site is inside a table (only works right if the table is centered though). This way, while the rest of the site is still loading, the banner is proudly attracting attention :)
Just another lil trick of mine :)

Paul: Yeah, Netscape has a hard time rendering large/multiple tables...[nbsp][nbsp] Just wait a few months for 5.0 to come out and fix that problem.[nbsp][nbsp];-D

Thanks, all..
I had to cut back on the tables to get it to load like I'd like.. it was driving me CRAZY. It cost a little in the looks dept. though. (Oh well)
<EDIT> The above link no longer works but you are free to view my goofy 404 page :)<EDIT>
Thanks again

An award (or is it death?) to Paul for the first 404 page that I've seen with music. :D

As long as we're on the topic of nested tables...
- How far back have nested tables been supported?
- What Netscape and IE versions first suppored them?
- Does WebTV support them?
I'm curious because I've always wanted to use them, but I was concerned about the percentage of people who would visit with old browsers that would choke.[nbsp][nbsp](...thinking to myself... maybe I should stop catering to the lowest common denominator, check every visitor's browser, and tell those using browsers older than verion 3.0 to get with the program.)

Nested tables (I believe) have always been supported, the problem is some browsers just choke with the extra overhead involved in figuring the position of each element of a table, especially when there are tables within tables...
But I personally design for the 4.x browsers with very little consideration to the older browsers and ESPECIALLY WebTV - this is probably why I am not a web designer hehe :)
I figure, if you are going to revert to old outdated technology, why do we even upgrade our browsers?[nbsp][nbsp]My sites use CSS, a little Javascript, and other simple stuff that older browsers don't support - I think they still show (just not as nice) in the older browsers, but I personally don't care if they do or not - if we make every site viewable on every browser, we lose style sheets, some JavaScript, and who knows what else... and unless your site is targeted specifically toward WebTV, I wouldn't worry about what it looks like there either.
Just MHO :)
