View Full Version : Apache Web Server - Win32 or Linux?

If I was interested in installing the Apache Web server on my PC in Windows 95(still), would it be better to install the Win32 version, or should I partition my drive for Linux, and go all out and install that and the unix flavor of Apache?

I don't have a slew of Unix knowledge, but I don't know if the Win32 version would be stable/consistent with what's installed on FQ.

I really don't want to install PWS either, but maybe I'll have to.

Anyway, I wanted to get people's opinions if/what they have installed on their machines.

Thanks

IMHO, you should go ahead and try to install Apache for Win32 - it would be much easier than attempting a Linux install.[nbsp][nbsp]I wouldn't worry too much about compatability with the daemons here at FQ...[nbsp][nbsp] Er, I'd hope not, at least![nbsp][nbsp]:-D

I currently have the following installed on Windows 98:

* Apache 1.3.4 (win32)
* PHP 3.0.6
* Perl 5.002.something
* MySQL (win32 gamma)

It all runs nicely. The only thing I can't get to work properly is any script needing sendmail - and I'm planning to write a tiny sendmail.exe that will just print it to a text file or something just for testing purposes, etc, to keep scripts from failing.

So far, anything I've done locally has worked on the server, once I finally set up PHP in safe mode (as it is on the server). I am currently working on a site that is 100% PHP/MySQL, with a full searchable database and many other things, including banner rotation, and I never could have designed it if I had to constantly upload and test and upload and test......

I also hacked this UBB 100% locally before ever uploading it to aota, and it worked first try without a hitch (surprisingly :)) So you shouldn't run into any real compatability issues there.

I recomend doing what I did - I have mirrored the directory structure of the server locally - I have c:\big\dom\xvdj and c:\usr\bin and c:\usr\local\bin and so on. Makes it easier because you never have to edit paths or anything - just upload as it is locally and it works on the server:)

Let me know if this helps :)
