This has to be an easy one, SSI

OK, all I want to do is add a little bitty "NEW" graphic to my items that are new, and have it expire after a date I set or 7 days from the date of insertion (latter preferable). I've got a javascript solution to do this, but SSI seems like a much cleaner way to go about things..

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Actually I think you'll have an easier time using the Javascript solution over SSI. It would probably be cumbersome to try and accomplish this via SSI.

You'd also probably need to use a seperate program (Perl! hehehe) called via SSI to dynamically show the image or not. Most likely it wouldn't be a large or cumbersome program, but it would be yet another thing to use.

It seems it should be doable with xSSI, but I don't have any idea how that would be done...

Using JavaScript would be gruvy, as it would run in the viewer's browser, not on the server. It'd make for less bandwidth use, less CPU thought, and overall a faster loading page.
