Not that important, but is it possible to let visitors upload files to my site? Nothing huge, but is there a CGI or something that would take care of this? If nothing else, could I just have them Email it as an attachment? Also, either way, can I limit the size allowed to avoid problems?

I am new to CGI, etc, so I don't know how these things are done, but I know how to do the Email thing, except for limiting the file size.

Anyway, it's not important, I'm just curious. Either way, I would have to download it and review it before posting, so maybe Email attachment is the best way. I just thought upload would be easier for viewers.

Thanks in advance for any help.

PS - I saw a similar question somewhere, but I don't think it was answered (or I didn't find it!) Thanx.

The answer you seek is contained at this URL:
hpwww.ec-lyon.fr/~vincent/apache/mod_put.html (http://hpwww.ec-lyon.fr/~vincent/apache/mod_put.html)

It is already compiled within the Apache module pool... Use it with care... http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif

Thanks for the info - I think I'll stick with Email for now, though. Sounds very risky, and I did not see any provisions to limit the size of an uploaded file.

I think I should start learning safer things before I get into stuff that could cause security problems. It is nice to know that there are so many possibilities, though!!!

I'm sure that one could limit file size in the HTML somewhere, maybe, but that could easily be overridden. I don't want to be responsible for a security problem in my first week here :-)

My only problem with the Email thing is that I am using a 28.8 modem, and I'd hate to get stuck downloading Email for hours on end.

Anyway, thanks for the speedy response, although it was not necessary - It was just a random thought!

ahve seen program that supposed ly do limit file size - infact i treid one just out fo curiosity adn it did work but the promag also came with warning about security adn such and how to keep peopel from usign it to destriy your site on my isp they do have browser editing adn uploading buit it is passoewrd protected - not public- i dont know much about this cept when in doubt use email -
you can ask peoel to limit hte size of their files and most will probably comply - you also may want to use a seprate address to handle those files so there not edging out all your other mail. also if you can viwe your mail onthe server and can delete it off the server you can spot fiels that may be too bigs and just wipe em out or iuse selctive downloading like ina remote mail program - say - that works right off the server.
so that way you canchoe the size opf your download at any given time - adn the rest of the messages stay onthe server until they are deleted by you.

remote mail is a wonderful thing.
