okay second dumb question of the day:
what do I need and how do I edit perl scripts, especially those already on the server? Yeah I honestly have no idea. I know you have to use telnet right? Well tried that and couldn't find anything once connected to the server and couldn't move around at all. ???? Help I'm out of my league!

hehe, Ok, you do not HAVE to use telnet to edit the scripts.. you can use a text editor for this .. I prefer http://www.ultraedit.com UltraEdit.
The key is making sure you upload them as ascii!
You may want to check out some of the beginners tutorials before diving in... you've asked a huge question http://www.aota.net/ubb/wink.gif I would suggest picking a single script and working on getting it installed and that will give you some more specific questions to go with.. you may want to check out this url to start with:
bignosebird.com/lscgi.shtml (http://bignosebird.com/lscgi.shtml)
Hope this helps

okay I see any editor will do..okay will have try that then... so you have to correct or mess with the script then upload it again and see if it works huh? If not rework on your system and re-upload or something huh?
actually I was really (for the time being anyway) just trying to figure out how to correct some things in the message board scripts you set up for me Deb. Not that I don't appreciate all the effort, just needed to see if I could make things perfect or closer to it.
Oh yeah and Deb how big of a memory hog is the Ultimate Bulletin Board on server space. Been seriously thinking about picking up this script and was just curious.
Thanks for enduring

It's a bit of a learning curve but if you have patience you can do it...
You've got the right idea for ready-made scripts.. just hack away at them till you get them how you like them.. in the process you'll find out what breaks them muhahahahah
Also note that in your logs_cgi directory is error logs... very helpful when debugging scripts.
I LOVE the UBB scripts!!! They have got to be the best on the net for the price. Though I do recommend leasing and not buying them.. because either way you'll have to re-lease or re-buy in a year if you want the upgrades.. and this upgrades these scripts every 12 hours I think <grin>
At any rate.. it really depends on how busy your forums are....
The UBB script you see here is using about 4megs of space currently.
Good luck http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif
