A number of years ago I set up a special mailbox to receive notifications of new subscribers to my ezmlm list, as per the instructions here (http://www.aota.net/forums/showthread.php?postid=68420#post68420).

I didn't think the email address I created was visible anywhere but in the last year or so it started getting spammed, with increasing frequency as time went on. I will delete that mailbox and create a new one but wonder how that address got spammed in the first place.

Any ideas?

It wasn't anything common that might be guessed or part of a dictionary attack?

I guess that's possible. I've had other addresses eventually spammed that I was very careful not to post anywhere. In fact my current primary, personal address started getting one or two a day starting about six months ago.

Does it happen that machine generated random addresses are fired off by the millions - the ones that don't bounce getting added to spam lists? That's the only explanation I can think of.

I changed the email address to which notices are sent and deleted the original mailbox and am still getting spam, to the new address. So I checked the full headers of the spam and found that email is being sent to
