View Full Version : A filter for inserting missing Date header?

We get some important automated emails that have no Date header. Thunderbird defaults to "12/31/1969 7:00 pm" (the UNIX epoch in Eastern Standard Time), which is rather unhelpful in a large mailbox that sorts by date. You never see the messages unless you think to look for them down at the bottom, and sometimes it's too late by the time you remember.

It is possible to sort by Order Received in Thunderbird -- which is our standard policy -- but it's easy to forget and fall back old habits, clicking on the @#$% Date column instead.

I've searched for some way to solve the problem in Thunderbird itself -- either by (a) creating the missing header or (b) changing the way the program handles a non-existent date, but I'm having no luck.

Creating a custom filter on the server to insert a proper Date header sounds like a direct path to a padded cell, but I can't think of any other solution.

QuestMail apparently looks at the Received lines if there's no Date, and I suspect other clients do that too, or else these developers would make sure there's a Date header in the first place. Complaints to that effect get less-than-enthusiastic responses. :grr:
