View Full Version : Best way to make a future site transition?

An associate wants us (FQ) to host his site. We have ordered abcd.net and that is ready to go. We will be developing a new interactive site at that visionary package. They have abcdX.com and abcdY.com. The original intent was to develop the new site then set up two IRO's and change the DNS.
Now they would like to move the ".coms" today with the old site information in them. If these are set up as IRM's how smooth will the transition be when we go to IRO's?
Steve,
Ok if I am following correctly you have New content for .net but they want old content to be displayed for the .coms right now and then eventually change the .coms to show the New content as well.
Changing an IRM to an IRO should be rather transparent as the IRM would be removed and then the IRO immediately setup and the internal mapping should be almost instantaneous. You may see some issues with browser cache possibly but there would be no propagation or ISP cacheing involved.

Yes, that is correct except that I do not have the New content ready yet
My concern was that we would have a delay on the IRM to IRO swap, that is great that my concern was unfounded. These are IRO style sites on another host, so I will set up two IRM's with identical content. Then develop the new site and when we are done, order the change from IRM's to IRO's.
Thanks for your help!
Steve,
When you order the two IRMs make sure you specify the same directory for each so they both show the content from that one directory. (Sorta sets one up like an IRO to an IRM ;) )

That makes it even simpler!
Thanks!
