I've telnetted into an account using PuTTYand I see this (and some other stuff) on my screen:

Question 1: I thought the pink highlighted directories were deleted a while ago. What does this mean?
Question 2: Is there something somewhere that tells me what different symbols (like @) and colors mean?

The @ sign indicates that the file name in question is in fact a symbolic link not a real file. The bright red highlight means that it is a broken symbolic link (IOW the file it points to no longer exists). They should be safe to delete.

BTW, PuTTY is both a Telnet and SSH client. When given the choice between the two protocols use SSH as it is encrypted and more secure. Telnet is really only still around for people who can't/won't install an SSH client.
Of course you might just be using "telnet" as a more general term for a remote shell.

Uh, yes I am. That comes from not really knowing what I'm doing.
And THANK YOU for your quick and helpful answer. I love FQ!
