I will be closing an account and setting up that domain as an IRM on another existing account. I understand that (http://service.futurequest.net/index.php?_a=knowledgebase&_j=questiondetails&_i=396) all files and email, including IRs overlaying the Full Package, will be completely removed from the system. and that the new IP will need to propagate.

I would like to ensure that no mail gets lost during the time frame. This is what I'm thinking in regards to mail:

1. Set up the email addresses from closingaccount.com on otherpackage.com.- ie friend@closingaccount.com gets set up as friend@otherpackage.com.
2. Forward any existing mail from closingaccount.com to otherpackage.com
3. Change the pop addresses at closingaccount.com to forwarding aliases
4. Close the account & set up the IRM

Will that keep any mail from being lost? Mail doesn't get lost during a propagation that stays within the FQ system, right?

I would do #4 a little differently...
Just place a downgrade order for closingaccount.com to be set up as an IRM. You don't need to specifically "close the account". Simply placing an order for it to be set up as an IRM will automatically result is our closing down the existing hosting package while we set up the new one.

It sounds like your description of how to handle the email is the best one can do for preventing any email loss during the change. There will be a very, very brief time while the domain doesn't exist on our network (after closingaccount.com is removed and right before the IRM is created) during which if email were received on our network, that our servers would claim we do not host that domain, and would refuse it.

If someone were to actually attempt to send email during that minute or two, they would receive an error message and would hopefully retry their send, at which time it should work.

If the email actually is received by our MX servers, our MX servers will know where to deliver the email (it will not be affected by propagation).

LOL @ the kermit reference.
Well, I'm getting my money's worth on support this weekend and feeling very green.
