That's what it's there for. Nothing wrong with utilizing the tools for things like this.

What happens is the server puts all of the pieces of your page together BEFORE the browser sees the page -- so yep, it'll all work http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

It's smart to use 'web weaving' for things like this so if you decide to change the code for some reason you only have to change it once. This worked GREAT for me on the FQuest site when we realized the script we were using had caused an error on certain browsers... once the fix was found (thx Meikel) I was able to make the change in my include file and fix the whole site http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif http://www.aota.net/ubb/smile.gif

So, I got busy and have been redesigning my navigation utilizing mouseover. I am using SSI to supply the pages with the mouseover and related graphics. Since the script lives in the <head> tag . . . I went ahead and stuck it on the txt file called from the server. Well - surprise, it works! I didn't know whether the shtml page would "work" with its top tags missing. Is this really bad design, or is it "okay" to do this?

I have a question, if i created an includes file, and set up a site with ssi, using shtml pages, will the info be able to work with cgi? I was told by 'little bro' that it wouldn't, so maybe I am gonna waste my time, but I am gonna try it anyways, cuz if it works, this would help me a ton. be back later to let ya's know the answer to my own question.

Justin, this post is JUST FOR YOU! *evil grin*

Remember way back then we talked about this third post and you talked me out of wasting my time on this cuz it wouldn't work?

I FINALLY decided to try it --------- and it does to work!

I suppose you will say you misunderstood the question -- which is something one will say when proven wrong. *grin*

I have many different pages now and editing them takes a lot of time when I need to make a few changes. The html's are posted to a cgi script .. and you swore up and down that it wouldn't work.

It worked without a hitch.

Question:
with all the notes in this forum due to server resources, I get highly confused on this topic -- with using SSI (and yes I am calling all files .shtml) is this okay? Now my site is totally dependent on SSI and CGI.

On a lighter note.

I worked really hard to dig this thread up from the past, and I really enjoyed it. I forgot how much fun the forum used to be and how friendly everyone WAS. I really miss that. I almost dare to ask, to open a topic &quot;whatever happened to...? i was laughing and giggling reading through some of those old threads! Gosh, to see how much we laughed and we learned.

I am happy to see how far I have come in a short time, even though[nbsp][nbsp]now my time has been limited and temporarily lost interest. If any of ya oldies are still around.. I can sincerely say, I miss ya's!

When we discussed this via ICQ, you had asked me (if I remember correctly) about putting SSI calls inside of a template file I think. This was a template that a CGI opened up and parsed out etc (I think it was when I hacked in the extra MIDI selections or something like that)...

Either that or it was SSI's directly in a CGI - either way, those won't work. You CAN put all the SSI's you want in an .shtml page of course - so yes, I misunderstood the question, or better yet you misunderstood the answer :þ

I once got really bored and dug waaaay back in the forums. A trip down memory lane - was fun ;)[nbsp][nbsp] I still remember how happy I was to be one of the first domains on SIX (as were you I think) (and btw I still am happy to be on SIX - I think a server has to have a personality, even if it is a crappy one with an attitude problem ;) )

Deb dug up one I had to laugh at - I had asked if you could create an .htaccess file in Notepad... not a month later I wrote the tutorial on it hehe - I've learned a LOT from these forums (and found a job hehe) and have had a lot of fun here too :)

I've been trying to be more playful/fun, like I was when I first visited these forums (I recall a week long conversation about the legal ramifications of mis-using the word SPAM, and Hormel's thoughts on the subject...)

I will admit that my attitude has gone downhill for a couple of months - lots of stress etc - but I hope it shows that I'm all around in a better mood lately :)[nbsp][nbsp]The move to FL and other things going on around (before and after) that time had me going nuts - but now I'm all settled in and doing great (thanks to Deb for smacking me around a bit :þ)

But anyway, looking back in the forums is fun:

- January, 1999:
[nbsp][nbsp]- Justin - never heard of PHP or MySQL, never seen Perl code
[nbsp][nbsp]- Deb - stumped by PHP, ready to give up
[nbsp][nbsp]- Hearts - never installed a CGI before

- October, 1999:
[nbsp][nbsp]- Justin - site uses PHP/MySQL/Perl
[nbsp][nbsp]- Deb - web site uses PHP
[nbsp][nbsp]- Hearts - site based on CGI/SSI

And that's just our web sites... but the point is, without these forums, my site would be all static HTML (and my second site would not even exist), Deb would probably have given up completely on PHP, and Hearts might not have her second site...

But enough of that - I like to live in the now :)[nbsp][nbsp]I have a lot of things to learn yet (if you only knew what kind of projects are on my agenda for next year... ;) )

Well.. I have certainly missed my bud! *sigh* The things we would talk about on ICQ.. all meaningless of course, but just to aggrevate ya.. ask ya questions, and to share gripes on life. I REALLY miss that! And, *YOU* promised when you moved to FLA our friendship wouldn't change, that you would still be the same ole Justin, and the only time I hear from ya now, is when you answer my support emails on behalf of FQ. :( -- whew-- finally got to say that.

I cannot get over the laughs I had here this morning. I really miss some of those people.

AND I can FULLY agree with you about the progress! *ONE* of FQ's hidden secrets, cuz she doesn't post so much, is Auteur. She and I are forever in touch, but without her, Justin hacking my script to make it how *I* wanted it .. and the MUCH needed advice (whether it was from reading others posts, or answering my questions) -- my site would not be what it is. I AM VERY PLEASED with its success. to me it is a success

Deb was the one who instigated me to experiment with scripts. NOT GONNA LET TERRA off the hook about the PROZAC (did Deb ever smack ya for that like she promised she would ;) )

*sigh* I just cannot believe it has been ALMOST a year.

And I just don't have the time to be online like I used to :( .. so therefore I haven't learned too much in the last few months.

My First post that I read here was written by Dell. He was having a terrible day. Price of Cigs went up.. Some channel was having re-runs of MY SO CALLED LIFE.. that was probably the funniest post I have ever read here. WHERE is he now? :( Him and Julie used to post all the time. Did they &quot;move?&quot;

I am HAPPY to be one of the first on SIX and as long as Terra can keep her performance up as great as it has been, then I AM NOT EVER leaving SIX. I will be having a major tempertantrum if tha day ever comes. I remember that night when we found out we were being there first! Remember how we zoomed!

I miss seeing the progress of FQ before it happens.

There have been some let downs a long the way. BUT there is NO place like HOME! ;)

whew.. am I sappy today or what?

eeeeeeeeeeks...[nbsp][nbsp]I better not leave out Rich. Cuz he gave me an all night crash course on understanding secure servers, cc processing, and e-commerce.

Okay.. gonna go and grab a bud outta the fridge. I gotta go to work now. *grin*

Thanks Justin. I am really happy for the changes in your life. Hey.. can I tell them about the fire hydrant? *evil grin*

Okay I had to chime in too.[nbsp][nbsp]I have to agree things used to be a bit lighter around here.

I too missed Dell and was wondering what happened to him a couple of days ago when devising some hacks for an upcoming possible CGI project.[nbsp][nbsp]Without Dell, who installed my first CGI scripts for me, I don't think I would have gotten up the gumption to play with[nbsp][nbsp]or even install &quot;those automated thingies&quot; as I once called them.

Thought Dell was going to join FQ team... not sure if I should ask what happened with that.

Well off to upgrade a cgi script.

Del left shortly after we had planned on him going full time for reasons of his own.[nbsp][nbsp]He no longer works with FQ.[nbsp][nbsp]I feel it best to let his reasons be his own....

The memories are grand.. that's for sure -- I see no reason why new ones can't continue to be made.[nbsp][nbsp]As long as we all continue to share what we learn and not be too shy to post what we don't know yet.[nbsp][nbsp]Half of the fun memories are a direct result of &quot;silly questions&quot; that we are able to look back on now ;)[nbsp][nbsp]

I've also noticed, that as we grow, we receive *many* new site owners who have already had poor experiences with their previous host, many times this seems to result in a less &quot;friendly&quot; tone with the new host until the barriers have been broken... I've always hoped these forums would be a great to help in relaxing the new comers and sharing the wealth of knowledge.[nbsp][nbsp]None of us know it all... but I think all of us can enjoy learning more of it, in a fun, friendly, &amp; relaxed environment!

Thanks for the memories all![nbsp][nbsp]

[nbsp][nbsp]My biggest kick on these forums was the announcement of the FutureQuest Merger between owners ;)[nbsp][nbsp]I doubt our real life families will ever forgive us for telling &quot;the world at large&quot; about the merger before telling them :þ[nbsp][nbsp]&quot;Merging&quot; on a lunch break leaves lil to tell :þ

Awww, Deb! I remember that!!! :)
Say, did you ever get the time to go off on a honey moon? I remember you guys putting it off awhile!!! :D

Hmmmm... allow me to[nbsp][nbsp]there has been a couple of b-days; one of the servers hardware was decommisioned with music and all; that time I was low on caffeine and had some pretty strange discussions with beanie babies (no one better dig THAT up); April Fools Day; that time Justin announced Deb's &quot;candle-wax secret&quot; for her keyboard (when I wrote my award-winning thesis on our upcoming blindness) and TeRRa's little blue pill scandal (which I never really heard too much about, since I don't chat with ICQ at all); and that time I had the nerve to wait until midnight just to be the first person to wish everyone a HAPPY Memorial Day (what was I thinking?)! :D

-Tatu

PS: Of course, I am not as &quot;close&quot; to all of you... mainly because I am afraid if I spent any more time around these forums or starting chatting on ICQ again I would NEVER get any work/food/sleep done. I do however have my memories of the past TEN months (I miscounted when I said 8 and 1/2 months earlier, I signed up early January).

April fools was fun - let's not forget how that &quot;Jed&quot; guy had us all going :)[nbsp][nbsp]That was fun! I wonder what ever happened to Jed... did we ever find out who he was?

Just had to chime in to say how much I love FQ. And thanks to Hearts, Deb, Justin, and too many more to mention, I have done things with my site that I thought I'd have to be a programmer to figure out. It's nice to know there are people who won't laugh at my stupid questions. You guys are the greatest and I love just reading through the posts sometimes. . . just makes me feel like I belong somewhere, finally. That's why I will always have a FQ banner on my Super Site front page!
sincerely,
