Hi everyone,

I would like to know how big is the biggest UBB hosted on FQ (how many members, how many posts).

Thank you :)

I think it may be Charles Capps' forums at flare.solareclipse.net

Heh, Aota.net is *not* the largest UBB on a FutureQuest... not by a long shot :P

In all honesty the biggest ones are on dedicated servers (pre-beta project..and no, there are none available yet...).[nbsp][nbsp]For the community servers I do believe the biggest UBB owners do particapate frequently on these forums and will be able to stand up and be counted if they see this post :)

Well, mine used to be quite small compared to Brian's at elitecaraudio.com, but he switched to vBulletin...

Mine has 831 registered members this morning (and I prune about 25 inactives per month) - and about 150-200 posts a day, minimum.[nbsp][nbsp]Not really sure, I don't prune all the forums myself.[nbsp][nbsp]We prune at least 5 times a week, still have hundreds and hundreds of threads.[nbsp][nbsp]The site averages about 7000 pageviews per day, most of it UBB traffic.

Site is on TAZ, since Jan 99 (didn't get to post that to the other thread, LOL.)[nbsp][nbsp]My community is for US Coast Guard families, particular those of us married to active duty members - our service is smaller than the other armed forces, and we don't have big bases with lots of services.[nbsp][nbsp]Information and support can be hard to come by, especially at the more remote units.[nbsp][nbsp]We also have lots of static info on various units, database of where people are located, etc.

Guys, guys...

All those UBBs aren't even close to this one:

http://bbs.counter-strike.net/cgi-bin/Ultimate.cgi

That UBB has over 26,000+ members and regularly generates about 3000-5000 posts, across all forum categories, per day.[nbsp][nbsp]Can you imagine the load being placed on the servers? :)

Currently the UBB at that site is down (I can't reach it).[nbsp][nbsp]If any of you are into Half-Life you have to check out the Counter-Strike mod (www.counter-strike.net (http://www.counter-strike.net)).

As I said, that has to be the largest UBB I have ever seen.

Joel

Oh lol, sorry - I should have read the first poster's question better :)[nbsp][nbsp]The largest UBB hosted on FUTUREQUEST servers ...

OK, well has anyone seen a UBB larger than the Counter-Strike one?

I was going to point out Warner Brothers, but they seem to have switched to something else... I'm not sure what software it is - it's not UBB and it's not the PHP rip-off either... but it does appear to be another UBB rip-off...

Word had it on the Scriptkeeper forums that it was an in-house written program, based on jsp.

As for the "PHP rip-off", instead of calling it a UBB rip-off, I like to call it a UBB Improvement...[nbsp][nbsp]but that's a whole different story.

I haven't checked out Warner Brothers, but I seem to recall reading that they have been using WWWThreads for some time now.

It may be an improvement, it may not (I don't know), but it is designed far too similar to the UBB, in almost every way - which does not show much creativity or imagination IMO... I have seen many different forum scripts out there with their own design, look, and feel - and I have seen many UBB rip-offs...

Anyway, these are just my own personal opinions.

About WB - they are using something with .jsp files - would this be some variation of server-side Java? Either way, it's not WWWThreads or VBulletin... but it is identical to the UBB/VBulletin from what I've seen...

Troy (the guy who ran/runs the Warner Brothers boards) said it was a custom-developed JSP app that allowed them to interface it with some internal databases...

The WB (as in the TV network) used Phorum, the last time I looked.

If they're using *.jsp files then I'd assume they were using Java Server Pages... It's an embedded html scripting platform just like PHP or ASP (It's Sun's way of fighting the big M), except all the code is in a java[nbsp][nbsp]"script" form (not javascript) and that it uses java beans, etc for the middle tier.

but it is designed far too similar to the UBB, in almost every way - which does not show much creativity or imagination IMO

When it was designed, it wasn't designed to be a "creative" and "imaginative" script.[nbsp][nbsp]It was initially designed to be an in-house, privately used forum script.[nbsp][nbsp]If it weren't for dozens of disgruntled UBBers urging them to release it, they probably wouldn't have.[nbsp][nbsp]One of the biggest features is that UBB users can transparently upgrade to this script, while maintaining the useability of their old UBBs.[nbsp][nbsp]In other words, it was designed to look like the UBB.[nbsp][nbsp]

Personally, I would much rather have a database and templatized version of the UBB, but they didn't seem to intent on creating something to that end.[nbsp][nbsp]Where there is a demand, somebody has to step-up and provide the supply.

We could go on and on about this topic for hours, I'm sure.[nbsp][nbsp]The basic point is that InfoPop indirectly created vBulletin.[nbsp][nbsp]InfoPop ignored what their customers wanted, so another company comes along and gives it to them.[nbsp][nbsp]That is the beauty of free enterprise...

Don't count Infopop out yet.[nbsp][nbsp]:)

jimbo

I did count InfoPop out - quite a while ago.[nbsp][nbsp]If InfoPop is in fact developing a UBB with SQL back end, I guarantee you it is so that they can remain competitive with vB.

The kicker, and you know all about this Charles, is that the developers of vB had approached InfoPop with this product, to see if they would be interested in releasing it under their name, and InfoPop didn't seem the least bit interested.[nbsp][nbsp]Considering this was what the majority of their customers wanted, I feel that was a slap in the face to InfoPop's customers.[nbsp][nbsp]I refuse to patronize a company that takes that little interest in what their customers want.

If they are that out of touch with the community that helped make UBB what it is today, then they deserve to be counted out.

One of my "online friends" runs several MASSIVE UBB's.[nbsp][nbsp]He has since converted his largest board to vB, because using OT would have cost him close to $1,500.[nbsp][nbsp]That is ridiculous.[nbsp][nbsp]And he had certainly outgrown the UBB.[nbsp][nbsp]In fact, I think (and I could be wrong) that he was one of the UBB's that Deb mentioned was on a beta ded-server here at FQ; though he has since outgrown that, too.

InfoPop had the opportunity to head this off at the pass, but they elected not to do.[nbsp][nbsp]In effect, they counted themselves out...

i tihnk the biggest UBB on FutureQuest is at http://www.tupac.net/board , their must be a 200thousand topics there with a million replies and somethin like 2 thousand members.[nbsp]

There are a handful of reasons why the UBB does NOT use SQL:
- Not everyone has access to an SQL database
- Setting up an app to access SQL can potentially be dozens of times more complex due to even more varied setups
- Support would be absolutely hellish

I'm going to theorize that this is the reason they haven't done anything about it so far.[nbsp][nbsp]The drawbacks completely outweigh the benefits... would you rather sell a system that you KNOW can run anywhere and is generally simple to set up, or would you rather sell a system that can't run unless certain things are configured exactly as required, and might require an expert to set up?[nbsp][nbsp]For IP's target audience, it doesn't make sense to use SQL exclusively.[nbsp][nbsp]I'm not saying there should somehow be an option to use some sort of SQL database at some point in the future, but going exclusively to SQL would be suicide.

UBB6 is scheduled for release later this summer...[nbsp][nbsp]Don't count IP out yet.[nbsp][nbsp]Trust me.

hey Charlse, do you know what new features are gonna be added to v6?

i know..that version that just came out, the only difference between it and the version before it is, they added the "Infopop" logo. thats messed up...

any one yall fimiliar with UBBhackers.com? i'm using a lot of them hacks to add new features to my UBB. the members list feature, who's online feature, the viewed by feature, and the news feature.

No one knows for sure what UBB6 will have...[nbsp][nbsp]Especially we lowly moderators.[nbsp][nbsp];)

I help run ubbhackers.com, actually.[nbsp][nbsp]It resides here on ASTRO.[nbsp][nbsp]:)

Don't get me wrong; I completely understand InfoPop's view on this.[nbsp][nbsp]The UBB is probably the most widely used app just for the reason that you can use it on almost any platform.[nbsp][nbsp]But with SQL and PHP both becomming more and more common, and the demand for a SQL based version so high, you'd have thunk that InfoPop would have jumped on their boards and surfed that wave.

I'm also not saying that the cgi based UBB should be totally abandoned by InfoPop, just that they should have planned to offer it for the customers that did want it and could have run it; which as proven by vB, there are many.

UBB is and always has been a great program, and it did wonders for my site; heck I probably wouldn't have started a site at all if it weren't for the UBB.[nbsp][nbsp]But InfoPop proved that they couldn't bend with the winds of change, and those winds are going to haunt them, I believe.

I think my main gruff is that the support and community of the UBB is incredible, and would love to have that *plus* a SQL backed app.[nbsp][nbsp]That is the only upside that it has over vB at this point.[nbsp][nbsp]Some questions go unanswered for days on the vB site, that is never the case at Scriptkeeper.[nbsp][nbsp]Hopefully that will change with time.

Have things quieted down over on the ScriptKeeper forums recently?

Things have calmed down quite a bit...[nbsp][nbsp]the mods have a new set of guidelines about how to deal with anything like that in the future.[nbsp][nbsp]You know, when IP does something that pisses people off...[nbsp][nbsp]*L*

Well I think the simple reason why Infopop is not making 6.0 with SQL support is because if they do so, who would use their Open topic product ?
