Hi,

I run a certain gaming site. I was approached by my advertiser and told that if I placed a popup banner on the main page of my site, as can be seen at another site www.gamedemo.com (http://www.gamedemo.com), I would make an additional 50,000 a year from that banner.

Now like all popup banners, it's annoying. Note that it is also above the regular size of the banner standard, 5 times larger in fact.

So the question is, would you accept the offer? It's repulsive to my viewers chances are, but it greats my bank book openly, what do I do?

Personally I would stay away from it... I equate popups with Geocities sites... It would easily drive me away...

However, if you are receiving offers like this, certainly you can generate some decent revenue with standard banner ads...

I'm not exactly sure when "too much is too much" ... but I've had quite the lesson lately on when ENOUGH is ENOUGH ( see http://www.aota.net/ubb/Forum5/HTML/000636-1.html ). ;)[nbsp][nbsp]

I do understand the need to keep the annoyance factor low... but I would consider selling my dignity for $50,000 :) haha.[nbsp][nbsp]Maybe you could find some sort of median with the advertiser... like a pop-up that only came up when they LEFT your site.[nbsp][nbsp]Hrm... *some* median anyway.[nbsp][nbsp]Good luck, and happy spending!

I could be wrong, but the way I read the original post is not that he is being offered $50k for popup advertising, rather that an advertiser claims that much more can be made by adding it.[nbsp][nbsp]In which case, I presume that would be based on CPM ads?[nbsp][nbsp]If so, there is a huge leap of faith that adding a very annoying popup will not adversely affect traffic, which in turn would reduce the quoted figure and quite likely existing advertising revenue throughout the site.

Of course, it can also be debated whether a homepage-only popup will diminish pageviews per visitor or repeat visits, or no effect at all...

I have mixed feelings on the pop up page. I use them on my sites, but do so with a cookie, so the person will only see them once. I as of this moment am only using this on my main page, and the pop up page is there to promote areas of my site, and have not had any complaints from visitors.

If you email me I will send you an in-depth report that came across my desk comparing regular ads vs. SUPERSTITIALS.

Brian, I thank you, though there is no need. I am not so worried about the amount of visitors I send through, compared to how annoyed they will be. I prefer if it doesn't work, since I am getting paid on a CPM basis.

Justin, I do run regular ads which also make money. Much more money, but with a much lower CPM. The popup aspect makes it a lucrative offer, but not compared to my net income. None-the-less 50K looks good anytime.

Dan, yes I have considered this. For this reason alone, I have decided not to accept the offer. I do not want traffic to lag in other areas of my site because of this. I am not allowed exit banners for the CTR is simply not the same, and fear that an entrance pop-up, especially at 5x the normal size, will bring down visitor return rate.

I would like to thank you all for making this decision easier to make.

Actually the banners I was talking about are not really even made to be clicked on rather to provide information about a product/company.

After visiting that url it appears this is not what your agency had in mind.

I hate those popup windows. On my 56K, I close them out before they even have a chance to load. I tell you what I think is a good banner - an eye-catching flash plugin :)
