When I type an IP address into the Address field in my Internet Explorer
5.0 it doesn't seem to recognize that the I've typed an IP address

(Specifically, 192.167.168.170), but instead give an error saying that the page cannot be displayed and cites a problem with DNS.

Normal URL type addresses such as www.microsoft.com (http://www.microsoft.com) work correctly.

IE 5 is running over a dial-up connection.

Has anyone ever seen this problem or a similar one?

Thanks

I get errors similar to this on a regular basis, but I believe it to be my connection and not IE5.[nbsp][nbsp]Dropping the line and start again sometimes works, sometimes a reboot.[nbsp][nbsp]And sometimes it's my ISP, and then I just switch - but I lose my freephone access :(

btw - tried the IP you gave and a page showed as "Istituto di Geologia Marina"
