Geez.[nbsp][nbsp]The more I learn about this stuff the more I realize I don't know.[nbsp][nbsp]I guess as long as I know more than my clients and can fake it pretty well and know how to learn things in a hurry when I need to I'll manage.[nbsp][nbsp]But it all gets a bit overwhelming at times.[nbsp][nbsp]Or is it just me...

I think it comes from being around these boards. Their usefulness comes in the fact that you can find a knowledgeable person that knows the answers that you need. Of course, that also points out how little each of us actually knows. Especially when Justin or Terra or any of the other really sharp people rattle off answers to the stumpers, it's easy to feel a bit inadequate.

I do web work as a hobby, but have a real job with sadly, a real boss. It seems that every day he calls me to get the answer to some question he doesn't know. Since we have a good relationship to survive some insults, my response to such queries is usually along the lines of "If I know and you don't, why are you the boss?" His reply is always "Because I'm smart enough to know I don't need the answers, I just need to be smart enough to know where to find them". That makes a lot of sense when you get right down to it.

"Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Well, information is an even more valuable commodity than fish. Give a man an answer and you solve one problem. Teach a man how and where to find answers and you solve most of his problems. You are smart enough to be able to find the answers that you need. In most cases, that's plenty smart enough. Don't judge yourself by the people in here that seem to know everything. It'll just give you headaches.

Well thanks for all the words of wisdom.[nbsp][nbsp]I used to do this as a hobby and now I'm actually making a living at it and it just scares the you-know-what out of me at times that I don't know as much as I should. Especially with new stuff coming along every day.[nbsp][nbsp]I just figure out what cgi is and then I have to figure out what phps and asps are and if I ever figure out what those are there will be a thousand new things out there that I will need to figure out and on and on.[nbsp][nbsp]But it's 99% fun anyway and it sure beats being a lwayer which is what I was in my former life and it makes my skin crawl to even think back on those years.

As Theodore Roosevelt said, "Whenever you are asked if you can do a job, tell 'em, "Certainly I can!" Then get busy and find out how to do it."

Best always,

If you search these forums about a year or so back, you'll see where I was at back then... Not that long ago, I was being stumped by many of the questions and answers on these forums. Even today, though I usually don't ever admit it, it still happens...
Give a man an answer and you solve one problem. Teach a man how and where to find answers and you solve most of his problems. When you work tech support, you have to be careful with this one - you don't want to make the users too smart or you may be out of a job :P (j/k)

I like the Teddy R quote.[nbsp][nbsp]That's how I got into this stuff to begin with.[nbsp][nbsp]Someone asked me if I could make a web page for them and I said "sure!" - never having done one before in my life. Life's fun.

And thanks, Justin, it does make me feel better to know that you've managed to acquire all sorts of knowledge in a relatively short time.[nbsp][nbsp]And don't worry, you'll always be ahead of at least one of us here.
