View Full Version : And now, I'm going to do something evil to Covad!

Ooh, how I wish I could put a nice big, red, flashing, size 7 AAAAAAAAAAAAARGH!!!! right here.

And, now, ladies and gentlemen, Covad has canceled all their contracts with my ISP![nbsp][nbsp]That means that I *CAN'T* get DSL now.

See, there's a problem with that.[nbsp][nbsp]I purchased the modem already.[nbsp][nbsp]I'm out $400 and have wasted four months.

Does anyone else see anything wrong with this?[nbsp][nbsp]>:[

Thats horrid. I am glad my cable modem has everything in one spot! With DSL they can play the blame game, and blame the phone company if you call the DSL company or vice versa.

So they were outsourcing the DSL portion of their service? And they made you pay for the modem? Mine was free w/installation ($99 installation) and no contracts etc, and it's all run by Sprint...

We have had DSL since about July through gte.net. We got the modem included in our installation charges. For something like $100 for the installation and hardware (internet side, the phone side, the DSL modem and the network card for our two computers that use the DSL line).

Sorry Charles, I know where you're coming from.

If you want, I think I have a few extra Free AOL 5.0 discs hanging around.[nbsp][nbsp];)[nbsp][nbsp]

I would be happy to send a few AOL disks, too. I think I have an earthlink one, as well.

In the mail Wednesday I received 4 earthlink cds and the usual truckload of aol disks.. gahh

Just think how cheap, err, appropriately priced, their services could be if they didn't send out 100 discs a year to every person in the friggin' country!

But hey, aren't we supposed to be making Charles feel better here?[nbsp][nbsp];)[nbsp][nbsp][nbsp][nbsp]I know of someone heavily involved high up in at&t@home technology in San Francisco who has to use DSL because he can't get cable where he lives...

From what I've read of DSL, it can be great or absolutely terrible, depending almost entirely on where you live in the country.[nbsp][nbsp]Brings back memories of countless supply and demand charts...

Justin: Because of recent development in the area, GTE had to put some sort of device on the lines to allow additional lines...[nbsp][nbsp]Which, of course, screws over their cheap DSL to the point that it's unavailable.
So, if I wanted DSL, I had to go through Covad, who provide business-grade service, at business grade prices.
I could have decided to let them pick the modem for me, but I decided to get it on my own...[nbsp][nbsp]I chose the best of the four available ones, and found it for $400, which was nearly $100 below what I would have paid otherwise.[nbsp][nbsp]Remember, business-grade service.[nbsp][nbsp]*grumble*

I've finally convinced the other members of the household that my ISP's incompetent...[nbsp][nbsp]My father (master negotiator) and I are going to be down to their office tomorrow morning to chew up and spit out a few of the unfortunate techies who happen to be around.[nbsp][nbsp]And with luck, one of the co-owners will be in.[nbsp][nbsp]Hopefully it'll be the one I haven't talked to before, it'll be much more fun to see his reaction.

(Darn sadistic streak....)

Well, update...

I went into the office to find I wasn't the only one in this situation - the only tech in was on the phone with another angry soon-to-be-ex-DSL customer.

It seems that Covad has canceled *ALL* contracts with *ALL* small ISPs.[nbsp][nbsp]All existing Covad customers have to either switch to a nationwide ISP that does Covad within 60 days, or lose the service.[nbsp][nbsp]Or something like that.

Anyway, people are royally pissed, and Covad has majorly screwed themselves over with this one.

I'm on the waiting list for the next provider that's doing DSL down here...[nbsp][nbsp]The order is labled "Needs DSL ASAP, CHEAP"

And in the mean time, I get to pat $50/month for a 24x7 modem connection.[nbsp][nbsp]Not bad considering the going rate is $85.[nbsp][nbsp]

Charles, at least you have hope! I need to *move* to get DSL. :(

Meanwhile, I rejoice when I get download rates 1/3 of what Justin gets when his service SUCKS!

I had to move 1200 miles to get DSL :P :) lol, must of forgot. Indiana corn fields to Florida tourist culture is quite an adaptation. I have to hand it to ya...

I like it here - though I didn't live in the corn fields... I was up near Chicago :)

And it's Verdana as the primary font (though the font has not changed... it was Verdana before...?[nbsp][nbsp]Unless Netscape was having trouble before?)

Verdana or Arial it was, but I don't remember Verdana font faces in the input boxes.

You don't live in the foreign tourist attractions here, either. I was, of course, figuratively speaking. ;)

I've got to agree with Tatu -- something about the font has definitely changed.[nbsp][nbsp]It might just be smaller, but it sure looks different, especially with italicized text.[nbsp][nbsp]I can still read it though, so no worries.[nbsp][nbsp]:)
