Getting started with HS FTPExplorer 3.3

Our first step, of course, is installing the software. To download HS FTPExplorer, simply visit: Haysoft.com. FTPExplorer is donationware.

After installing it on your computer, open HS FTPExplorer.

Now you'll need to add your site to the connection list. Begin by clicking the icon that looks like a piece of paper with a pencil ("Add Site"). (See image below.)

This will take you to another screen where you will enter the details for your site. (See image below.)

If you are using the FTP account set up with your FutureQuest^® account, the hostname, username, and password (as long as no changes have been initiated by you) can be found in your Activation Letter. If the domain has not yet been registered or transferred to the FutureQuest^® servers, you will need to use the Temporary Account Access information found in your Activation Letter.

After entering your information, click "OK" and you'll be ready to connect to your site.

To connect, simply choose the site you entered from the pulldown menu located next to "Connection Name:" and click the Connect icon next to it. (See image below.)

Once you connect to your site, you will see its directory listing on the right side of the screen. Your computer files and directories will be shown on the left side. Choose the directory that contains your files to be uploaded from your computer and the directory that you wish to upload files to in your web space. To transfer files from your computer to your web space, simply drag and drop those files from the left side into your web space directory on the right side. If successful, you will see the message "Files were uploaded" in the section below the directory listings and the file that was transferred will be listed on the right-hand side of the screen. (See image below.)

Note: Your www directory is where you must upload all of your web files for them to be viewable from a browser. Your cgi scripts should go into the cgi-bin directory.

When you're finished uploading your files, close your session by clicking the Disconnect icon on the top right side of the screen. (See image below.)

That's it!

This tutorial is just the beginning and hardly scratches the surface of what you can do with FTP once you become acquainted with it. If you're new to FTP, take some time to experiment, visit the Community Forums for help, and explore the web for other tutorials that will increase your knowledge of FTP (File Transfer Protocol). You now have the tools at your fingertips, it would be a shame not to use them!
