What Information Do I Need to Configure My Email Program?

There are a few key pieces of information you will need to know to configure your chosen email program for sending and receiving email.
  • Your Email Address
The email address will resemble username@example.net, where username is the name of the account you are setting up and example.net is your domain name. The email address is not CaSe-SeNsiTiVe, so Bob@Example.net will work the same as bob@example.net. Your root/Shell email account address and username are provided in your Activation Letter. To create additional email accounts offered with a Full Package, visit the Email Manager in the CNC.

  • Password
The password for your root/Shell email account is can be found within your Activation Letter, as long as you haven't changed it since then via the CNC Email Manager. The password for email accounts over and above the Shell account will be as specified when you create the accounts via the Email Manager in your CNC.

  • Default Domain
This is example.net (replace "example.net" with your actual domain name).

  • POP3 Server
This is pop.example.net (replace "example.net" with your actual domain name).

  • SMTP Server
This is simply mail.example.net (replace "example.net" with your actual domain name).

  • FROM Address
Put the FULL email address here. For instance, if you are setting up an email account for sales on the domain example.net, the FROM address would be sales@example.net.

  • Return Email Address
Whatever you would like it to be. Usually the same as your FROM address.

  • Your VMIP-
IMPORTANT: This is only for accounts which do *not* have a dedicated IP address.

It is very important to remember this when running on a server that uses the HTTP/1.1 protocol! If your Activation Letter specified a VMIP- (Virtual Mail Identifier Prefix), when setting up your email program you will need to include the VMIP- before the username for your Login/Username. For example, if your email address is owner@example.net and your VMIP- is xdom, you would need to use xdom-owner for the Login/Username. You must use your VMIP- with every POP account you set up. If you decide to create sales@example.net then your login name will be VMIP-sales. This is the only time you need to add the vmip- to your login name.

Tip: Your VMIP- is probably xexample- if on a Full Package with a shared IP or pexample- if on a Parked Package (refer to your Activation Letter). If you have a dedicated IP address the VMIP- is not required and should not be used. If your Activation Letter notes a dedicated IP address then your username is all that is needed. Alternatively, you can just use the full email address as the username for accounts on either shared or dedicated IPs. Using the example above, you can just use owner@example.net (example.net being replaced with your domain name).

Note: FutureQuest® provides ways for you to access your email securely. For more information, visit: Secure POP, SMTP, and IMAP access

IMPORTANT INFORMATION: Before sending email from your FutureQuest® account, you must first authenticate yourself to the mail server.

There are two methods of doing this:

1: POP before SMTP This simply means checking for incoming email before attempting to send email. Once you have checked for incoming email, you are allowed to send email for up to 15 minutes, from your current IP address, without further authentication.

-OR-

2: SMTP-Auth This is a setting you will need to make in your email client software, if it is supported, in order to use. SMTP AUTH is a method used for verifying a user's login and password before allowing mail to be sent to other mail servers on the Internet. Once configured, it allows you to identify yourself to the mail server via username and password before sending email.

This requirement has been put into place as a defense against spammers that attempt to send out (relay) their messages by forging valid FutureQuest® accounts as the senders.
